Ajaran mahabbah yang dibawa oleh Rabiah Ad-Dawiah merupakan kelanjutan dari tingkat kehidupan zuhud yang dikembangkan oleh Hasan Al-Basri. Cinta yang murni itu lebih tinggi daripada takut dan pengharapan.
Selain sebagai sufi, beliau juga seorang filosuf. Dalam dunia yang masyarakatnya tempat berkembang seringkali menghadapi problema seperti kesenjangan antara nilai-nilai duniawiyah dengan nilai-nilai ukhrawiyah. Dalam situasi demikian tasawuf merupakan kendaraan pilihan untuk mengatasi masalah ini. Dalam kalangan generasi muda yang tertarik menempuh jalan tasawuf lebih mencari ajaran tasawuf yang lebih memadukan keseimbangan antara urusan duniawi dan ukhrawi.
